SCANDAL TOPIC: OPIOID FILES EXPOSE SERIES
analyzing a historical or contemporary scandal:7-10 numbered pages, not counting required footnotes and bibliography, using multiplesources
Your final researchpaper must be uploaded onto Canvason the due date listed in the syllabus.
It should be written in a Word document, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with numbered pages, footnotes, and bibliography and stapled together.
Your citations should be footnoted in the so-called Chicago style format rather than interrupting the text in parenthetical asides in the so-called APA format. See below for examples.
Grading is based on your knowledge and understanding of the material, including key themes of the course; on the accuracy of your summary/description and the originality of your analysis/interpretation; and the clarity of your writing, including proper citations, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Your paper should summarize and describe the case you are writing about and why it qualifies as a scandal; explain how it was uncovered (or manufactured); how it waspublicized; and describe its final outcome (unless it is still unraveling).
Be sure your paper covers the role of all three actors in your scandal (sinners, exposers, and public) and explain whether you think the scandal you are writing about is an objective or subjective one (and back up your argument). You may wish to discuss whether you think your scandal is an individual or an institutional scandaland whether/how it reflected the concerns of the time.
Also, don’t forget to explain why if at all your scandal matters—including whether and howit redistributed power, reinforced societal norms, offered insight into our culture, gave powerless people a way to rebel, was an entertaining form of Schadenfraude, or anything else. Or maybe it didn’t really matter—that’s OK to say, too, as long as you back it up.
