Example1 for question 2

This course has been a complement of something that I experienced about six years ago. My first job in the US was at Cuban American National Council (CNC) located at 1223 SW 4th St, Miami, FL 33135. It is one of the agencies under the Career Source of South Florida umbrella. There were many programs there aimed to provide support to some part of the population in need at no cost. I worked under the Refugee Program. In general, my job was to look for open positions in the community and insert as many refugees and other people legally authorized to work in this country as I could in the workforce. The requirement for this position was just to earn a Bachelor’s degree. It was a challenge to me because I had lived in the US for just 10 months when I started the job. My background helped me to develop the job description well and with a lot of success. I always thought that there must being a competent professional in the field to perform this type of job named in those times: “Job Developer.” I always felt this job really important and with and tremendous humanity vision.

Time flow, and this course comes to my life to show me that this professional exists. I know how important this perspective of counseling is because I worked precisely as a Career Counselor under another name, but it was what I did in CNC. Experiences were innumerable with all clients I placed in jobs positions. Since you received the client to complete the intake on the system until you placed this client in a job that fixes his/her need appropriately, the relation was amazing. Support, encouragement, orientation, suggestion, advisement, follow-ups, evaluation, redirection, and many things that are not under the job description you sign under the contract take places to make the “job developer” incredible.
I learned in this course all theories that support what I did almost 6 years ago. I learned that what I thought about this perspective’s importance is true, and science takes care of that. I learned enough to cover some blanks about this field in career counseling, and I learned enough to continue learning.

Example2 for question 2

Throughout the text and presentations, I felt myself learning to check my internal biases and approaches when advocating for clients. When considering an intake, our perceptions determine the information-gathering we get from the client; what can we honestly pick up on when it comes to supporting those we work with? Are we asking relevant and useful career counseling questions to the client at hand, or are we “following a procedure” we know won’t support a long-term plan for the unique person? How present are we, and aware of the outside factors (as well as internal) that deal with our clients?

I also think of the numerous inventories and assessments available to put into words the actions for our clients and even ourselves. What assessments do we believe will provide the most effective outcome or intervention for the client? Is it relevant, or are we making connections that won’t help with goal-setting or client-skills? Luckily, the textbook is easily referenceable and helps break down the assessments we can consider when interacting with the client’s community and resources.
